Direction representation

Your face side is considered as North.
Your right is East and left is West respectively.
Your down is considered as South.

direction representation - left and right

Your right is the right and your left is the left

We all know the Pythagoras theorem,

    \[a^2 = b^2 + c^2\]

Let’s dive into some direction questions.

Question 1 ) Ram started walking from his home in search of Sita. He went 90 m in the East, then he turned right and went 20 m. After this he turned right and after going 30 m he found a forest. He searched in the forest, but didn’t find her. From there he went 100 m to his North and reached the bank of a river. In which direction from his home is he now?
A. North B. East C. North-East D. West

Solution: The only way to find is by drawing a map. Let’s start drawing.

Now, what is his position with respect to his home
If we see from his home he is in North-East position. But, if we see from his position to the home then it will be south-west.
So, it is always necessary to understand we are supposed to answer with whose respect.
Here, we are asked with respect to his home. So, the answer is North-East.

Answer: C

Question 2 ) A boy runs 5km towards East and then turns left and walks 6km. Again he turns right and walks 9km. Finally, he turns to his right and walks 6km. How far is he from the starting point and in which direction?
A. 9km, West B. 14km, East C. 9km, East D. 14km, West

Solution: Let’s draw the map

The question is how far is he from the starting point and in which direction?

Answer: B

Question 3 ) Jorah rides 3km straight on his bicycle, turns left and rides for 6km, and then takes right turn and rides for 6km, again 3km to the right and finally 6km to the right. How far is he now from his starting point?
A. 3km B. 3.46 km C. 4.24km D. 1.732km

Solution: Jorah rides straight on his bicycle but it is not mentioned on which direction. It means we can assume any direction. For a better understanding, we will go in North direction.

We can assume any direction. We have assumed north direction in this case.

How far is he from starting point?

Jorah already covered 3 km in the right as shown in the green arrow. When he comes down only 3 km is remaining as shown in the highlighted word.

Here the Pythagoras theorem is applied. and we know

    \[ a^2 = b^2 + c^2\]

    \[ ?^2 = 3^2 + 3^2\]

    \[ ?^2 = 9+9\]

    \[ ?^2 = 18\]

    \[ ? = 2.24\]

Answer: C

Directions for questions 4-5: Dev, Kumar, Nilesh, Ankur and Pintu are standing facing to the north in a playground such as given below:

Kumar is at 40m to the right of Ankur.
Dev is at 60m in the south of Kumar.
Nilesh is at a distance of 25m in the west of Ankur.
Pintu is at a distance of 90m in the north of Dev.

Question 4 ) Which one is in the North-East of the person who is to the left of Kumar?
A. Dev B. Nilesh C. Ankur D. Pintu

Question 5 ) If a boy starting from Nilesh, met Ankur and then Kumar and then Dev and then Pintu and whole the time he walked in a straight line, then how much total distance did he cover?
A. 215m B. 155m C. 245m D. 185m

Solution: Let us draw the diagram.

90 m includes the 60 m from Kumar to Dev

Now, let’s solve the 4th question.
4. Which one is in the North-East of the person who is to the left of Kumar?
A. Dev B. Nilesh C. Ankur D. Pintu

Solution: The question wants us to find out who is in the north-east position who is in the left of Kumar. To the left of Kumar there is Ankur. Who is there in the north-east of Ankur? It is Pintu. So, the answer is Pintu.

Answer: D

5. If a boy starting from Nilesh, met Ankur and then Kumar and then Dev and then Pintu and whole the time he walked in a straight line, then how much total distance did he cover?
A. 215m B. 155m C. 245m D. 185m

Solution: If we take the diagram
A boy starts from Nilesh and reaches Ankur = 25m
From Ankur he reaches Kumar = 40m
From Kumar he reaches Dev = 60m
From Dev he reaches Pintu = 90m

Addition is 215m

Answer: A
