Concept to solve Coding and Decoding Questions

There is no special trick for Coding and Decoding. We will show you certain questions which could help you to solve the questions on which basis. The scope to analyse the question is deeply understood in the question which can help you to solve the coding and decoding question.Practice these questions and crack any competitive exam.

Important note: Analyse the question in which the sample is coded.

Before we dive into questions it is better to know which alphabet stands in which number or position

alphabet order for coding and decoding question

Let’s dive into some questions:
Question 1 ) If the word “CIRCUMSTANCE” is coded as CRUSACICMTNE”, then the word “HAPPINESS” is coded as?

Solution: The odd numbers position of alphabets are arranged first and then even number position of alphabets in the sample coding as shown below.

CIRCUMSTANCE is coded as CRUSACICMTNE

Now, it is easy to code the “HAPPINESS”

HAPPINESS is HPIESAPNS

Answer: HPIESAPNS

Question 2 ) If the word “STRUCTURE” is coded as TVUHZZN, then the word “REMEDY” is coded as?

Solution: The sample word is coded on the basis of +1, +2, +3, +4, +5 for each letter in the word as shown below.

STRUCTURE is coded as TVUHZZN

Now let’s code “REMEDY”

REMEDY is SGPIIE

Answer: SGPIIE

Question 3 ) If the word “GROUND” is coded as HPRQSX, then the word “NOURISH” is coded as?

Solution: The word “GROUND” is coded as +1 -2 +3 -4 +5 -6 and so on.

GROUND is HPRQSX
For further understanding please, take a look in the alphabetical order table

Now, let us code “NOURISH”.

NOURISH is OMXNNMO

Answer: OMXNNMO

Question 4 ) If the word “MAJESTY” is coded as NZKDTSZ, then which of the words is coded as HKJLQRF?

Solution: All the above question before we were supposed to code. Now, the end term is given and we are supposed to decode.
Once we code the answer we are supposed to give the answer in opposite to get the answer. You will get it once you see the below pictures.

The word “MAJESTY” is coded in the form of +1 -1 +1 -1 +1 -1.

MAJESTY is coded as NZKDTSZ
This the coded form.

In order to decode the formula will be in the opposite version such as -1 +1 -1 +1 -1 +1 -1 and so on.

HKJLQRF is GLIMPSE
The opposite formula of coding is the formula for decoding

Answer: GLIMPSE

Question 5 ) If the word “REGISTRATION” is coded as TSIGERNOITAR, then the word “ACCURATE” is coded as?

Solution: The word “REGISTRATION” is coded in the form shown below.

REGISTRATION is coded as TSIGERNOITAR
REGISTRATION is divided equally and then coded by putting the last letters in the first till the whole word is completed

Now, ACCURATE can be coded as

ACCURATE is UCCAETAR

Answer: UCCAETAR

Question 6 ) In a certain code, if Violet is called as Green, Green is called as Red, Red is called as Brown, Brown is called as Orange, Orange is called as Yellow, Yellow is called as Blue and Blue is called as Indigo, then what is the colour of human blood called?

Solution: What is the colour of human blood? It is red. As per the above question, red is coded as Brown. The answer is Brown.

Answer: Brown

Important note: A is called as B is equal to B means A.
Another example, Violet is called as Green = Green means Violet.
Another example, Pen means Pencil = Pencil is called as Pen

Question 7 ) In a certain code, if Pen is Eraser, Eraser means Book, Book means Scale, Scale means Sharpener, Sharpener means Duster and Duster means Table, then what is the name of the object that is used to clean the black board?

Solution: As per the important note let us re-frame the subjects.

Eraser is called as Pen
Book is called as Eraser
Scale is called as Book
Sharpener is called as Scale
Duster is called as Sharpener
Table is called as Duster.

What is the object used to clean the blackboard? It is duster and duster is coded as Sharpener.

Answer: Sharpener

Question 8 ) In a certain code, if each letter in the English alphabet, with an odd-numbered value is given a code of 2 and each of the remaining letters is coded as 1, then what is the code for the word SALVATION?

Solution: In order to figure this out we must know which alphabets are even-numbered and odd-numbered. Check the below table.

alphabet order - coding and decoding

Now, let us calculate numbers for each of the letters. If it an odd number value then we have to code it as 2 and the other values that are even number values as 1.

S = 19 = 2
A = 1 = 2
L = 12 = 1
V = 22 = 1
A = 1 = 2
T = 20 = 1
I = 9 = 2
O = 15 = 2
N = 14 = 1

The coded word is 221121221

Answer: 221121221

Question 9 ) In a certain code, if CRICKET is coded as 3923564, ROCKET is coded as 913564 and KETTLE is coded as 564406, then how is LITTLE coded as?
A. 244060 B. 024406 C. 020446 D. 200446

Solution:
CRICKET = 3923564
ROCKET = 913564
KETTLE = 564406

As per the above demo words, we can code the below words
L = 0
I = 2
T = 4
T = 4
L = 0
E = 6

LITTLE = 024406

Answer: 024406

Lets Jump into some complex coding and decoding questions

Question 10 ) Here are some words translated from an artificial language.
peslligen means basketball court
ligenstrisi means courtroom
oltaganti means placement test
Which word could mean “guest room”?

A. peslstrisi B. vosefstrisi C. gantipesl D. oltastrisi

Solution: As per the model questions above peslligen and ligenstrisi we can figure that “ligen” stands for court. In the second model question if ligen stands for court then strisi stands for room. In the first model question if ligen stands for court then pesl stands for basketball.

Now, let’s look out for ‘guest room’. We have figured that strisi stands for room. Look for the options that has strisi.
Now, strisi is available in options A, B and D. Option C is directly eliminated.
Now, let’s eliminate the remaining options.
Option A has pesl which means basketball. So, option A is eliminated.
Option B has vosef which we don’t know the meaning. Let’s see option D.
Option D has olta which could mean either placement or test. So, option D is eliminated.
The only option left is B. Which could probably mean that ‘vosefstrisi’ is ‘guest room’.

Answer: B

Question 10 ) If tee see pee means drink fruit juice, see kee lee means juice is sweet, and lee ree mee he is intelligent, which word in that language meanns sweet?

Solution: Let’s figure out
tee see pee = drink fruit juice
see kee lee = juice is sweet
(There is one words common in the code which is see and one word common in the word is juice)
So, see = juice.

Now,
see kee lee = juice is sweet
lee ree mee = he is intelligent.
(There is one word common in code which is lee and one word in common in word which is is)
So, lee = is

We need to figure out which word could stand for sweet.
Let’s take the second statement
see kee lee = juice is sweet
We already know, see = juice, lee = is
Only one word is left which is kee and that in decoded word it must stand for sweet.
So, kee = sweet

Answer: kee

Question 10 ) If ‘+’ means ‘-‘, ‘-‘ means ‘*’, ‘x’ means ‘/’ and ‘/’ means ‘+’ then what is 9 – 7 + 85 * 17 / 15 = ?

Solution: As per the code, the following will be the decoded information.
+ = –
– = *
* = /
/ = +

So, 9*7-85/17+15 = 63 – (85 /17) + 15 = 63 – 5 + 15 = 73

Answer: 73

Question 11) Study the following information to answer the given questions: In a certain code,
‘he was singing good’ is written as ‘la pa ho ta’,
‘good was the aim’ is written as ‘zo ho ji la’,
‘singing at the stadium’ is written as ‘ma ta ku ji’, and
‘was this is a stadium’ is written as ‘ku bi ho vi’

Rough work:
he was singing good = la pa ho ta
good was the aim = zo ho ji la
(From the above codes and words we can find out that was = ho or la; good = la or ho)—(1)

good was the aim = zo ho ji la
singing at the stadium = ma ta ku ji
(From the above codes and words we can find out that the = ji)

singing at the stadium = ma ta ku ji
was this a stadium = ku bi ho vi
(From the above codes and words we can find out that stadium = ku)

good was the aim = zo ho ji la
was this is a stadium = ku bi ho vi
(From the above codes and words we can figure out that was = ho
If was = ho then good = la in equation 1)

We already know that the = ji, was = ho, and good = la then aim = zo

he was singing good = la pa ho ta
singing at the stadium = ma ta ku ji
(We can figure out singing = ta )

he was singing good = la pa ho ta
(We know that la = good, was = ho and singing = ta and only code is left that is pa. So, it is certain to say pa = he)

singing at the stadium = ma ta ku ji
(We already know, singing = ta; the = ji and stadium = ku so the only one left is ma and that has to e be at)

( i ) Which of the following represents the ‘the aims stadium’?
A. ma pa ji B. ku ji zo C. ji ku la D. ji zo ma
Solution: We already know ‘the’ = ji, ‘aims’ = zo, ‘stadium’ = ku.
The only option which has all the decoded words is option B
Answer: B

( ii ) What is the code for ‘at’?
A. zo B. ma C. ji D. ku
Solution: We already know that ‘at’ = ma. Look for the options which have the word ma
Answer: B

( iii ) Which of the following may be the code for ‘she was singing’
A. ho ma ta B. ro ta zo C. pa la ta D. ho bo ji
Solution: We already know ‘singing’ = ta and and ‘was’ = ho but we don’t know what is the code for she. But the question doesn’t want the exact answer but could be the most probable answer.
Option A and C have ho and ta. But in option A we have ma (where ma = at) So, option A is not the correct answer. So, option A is eliminated. So, only C has to correct.
Answer: C

( iv ) Which of the following may be the code for ‘he good singing’?
A. ho ku zo B. la ma t C. pa la ta D. pa ho bi
Solution: We know that ‘he’ = pa; ‘good’ = la and ‘singing’ = ta.
So, look into the options where the above codes are present. Only C has all the codes mentioned.
Answer: C

( v ) What is the code for ‘aim’?
A. zo B. pa C. ta D. bi
Solution: We know that aim stands for ‘zo’. Look for the option which has the word zo.
Answer: A
